Steven Champeon Named to Web2001 Advisory Board

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Raleigh, NC - 18 January 2001 — Steven Champeon, well known Web technologies author, editor, and conference speaker, and Vice President and CTO of hesketh.com, has been named to the advisory board of WEB2001. Champeon's involvement on the board is the latest step in a relationship that has spanned four years, since his first appearance at the Web97 show, and which has included tutorials, keynotes, and participation on panels, as well as participation in and judging of the Cool Site in a Day competition.

WEB2001 is the only national conference designed by Web professionals for Web professionals and includes objective, solutions-oriented information on Strategy, User Experience, and Technology. The series began in 1996.

This year's conference will be held September 4-8 in San Francisco and is sponsored by CMP Media Internet & Mobile Group. It will include five days of intense instruction and collaborative learning on core topics essential to professional success.

Steven Champeon discusses issues that will likely be addressed at WEB2001: "I believe there will be a shakeout of low-end Web design professionals, as technologies like XML and XSL continue to be implemented for solutions needing more than static publishing, such as data-driven systems that need to deliver content to devices other than your average desktop browser. The maturation of the dotcoms is grabbing all the headlines, but what's really important is the maturation of the industry that brings all manner of businesses online - not just the pioneers."

Champeon is an active member of the steering committee of the Web Standards Project (WaSP) www.webstandards.org, an international coalition of leading Web developers and Web experts. In regards to standards, he adds, "Standards, of course, are still an issue, but we're finally entering the era where older browsers will be phased out more and more, and we can finally use CSS and the W3C DOM reliably across platform and browser. The browser wars aren't over, but the battlefield is finally leveling out. The increased capabilities and adherence to common standards is already enabling a new breed of Web-centric applications, and developers need to know how to cope with the heightened expectations such capabilities bring. Beyond that, designers will need to work more and more closely with backend developers, to enable more powerful and flexible solutions, and I think areas such as technical project management (as opposed to old-school design shop methods) will be more and more important. So expect even more emphasis on breaking down the boundaries between geeks, marketing folk, and management, or shoring up the lines of communication between them."

Champeon excels in large-scale Web site technical and information architecture. His expertise in both client-side (DHTML, Javascript, CSS, XHTML, XSL) and server-side technologies (Perl/mod_perl, PHP, XML, Cold Fusion, and Apache server configuration and development), online communities, technical communications, Linux/UNIX systems administration, and security makes him a highly sought after technical writer and editor as well as speaker at trade conferences.

He is the author of Building Dynamic HTML GUIs, from Hungry Minds (formerly IDG), which has received positive reviews within the Web development community. He also provides technical editing on XML, XHTML, and other Web-related topics for Hungry Minds, MIS:Press, O'Reilly and Associates, and Macmillan/New Riders. Examples of projects in which he has been involved, either as technical editor or development editor, include: Jeff Veen's Art and Science of Web Design, Jeffrey Zeldman's upcoming Taking Your Talent to the Web, Simon St. Laurent's XHTML: Migrating Applications toward XML and XML: A Primer, Louis Rosenfeld and Peter Morville's Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, and Elliotte Rusty Harold's XML: Extensible Markup Language.

Champeon is also a frequent contributor to online and print magazines for Web professionals, including Web Techniques, Webmonkey, A List Apart, High Five, Developer.com, Stating the Obvious, and others. He has most recently worked with Apple Computer, providing Javascript tutorials for their newly launched Apple Internet Developer site.

A highly sought after speaker at trade conferences, Champeon will next appear in Atlanta in February and Amsterdam in March at the Thunder Lizard conferences. In addition to his participation in CMP's Web conference circuit and Cool Site in a Day competition, he contributes to South by Southwest (SxSW), and other industry conferences, often speaking on DHTML and how to grow successful online communities.

Bryan Mason, Program Manager for the WEB2001 Conference says simply, "Champeon is, in short, the bomb."
