National Resource for Character Education Makes Timely Online Debut

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Raleigh, NC - 15 March 2001 — Lack of self-esteem has been cited as a significant factor in the student shootings that have dominated national newscasts over the past few weeks. Reports of school violence have moved many parents and community leaders to search for educational models that develop feelings of hope, pride, and confidence in young people. For them, the just-released www.buildingcharacter.org will be welcomed as an easy to access resource.

hesketh.com proudly announces its donation of this online presence for Building Character, Inc., a nationally-recognized non-profit center serving individuals and organizations who desire to positively impact the character development of children and youth. hesketh.com constructed the Building Character Web site and is also providing hosting services.

The Web site expands Building Character's offerings to an online audience, providing valuable information such as resource materials, training programs, consultation services, and e-learning experiences. This information gives adults tangible steps for modeling strong character and for helping young people become confident and caring individuals.

Judy Hoffman, founder and co-director of Building Character and former chair of the Wake County Board of Education states, "Character education emphasizes those common-ground traits - such as respect, responsibility, integrity, and compassion - that parents want their children to exhibit. The true test of the effectiveness of character education is the extent to which those involved are intrinsically motivated to choose right over wrong."

Of hesketh.com's involvement with Building Character, Hoffman remarks, "We are grateful for hesketh.com's commitment to character education, clearly evident from the time, energy, and enthusiasm they have devoted to developing our Web presence. They have done a marvelous job of capturing our passion for children, teachers, and parents. Through this generous in-kind donation, hesketh.com has designed an expandable way for us to further our reach."

hesketh.com president Heather Hesketh responds, "The decision to work with Building Character was a simple one for us. We're passionate about people, and we're passionate about the Web. We created an expandable framework for Building Character so that its online presence can easily grow over time, and we integrated into the site our expertise in building online community (in other words, where people can congregate to exchange information). As character is a learned behavior, we believe individuals working together in community can have life-long influences on a young person. We want to be part of that community."
